Landscape Design

Your landscape design is like a floor plan for an outdoor area and should be practical, and reflect your needs, likes and interests.

To figure out what you want to get out of your design you will then need to consider:

The function of your garden. This is a crucial aspect of landscape design as it details what the purpose of the garden will be for. Depending on your requirements the function of the garden could be one or a mix of the below:

Entertainment – with plenty of covered areas, seating and relaxing areas that can accommodate large crowds.
Child Friendly. – A safe garden with plenty of lawn and open space that the kids can run around in
Pet Friendly. Materials and plants that can withstand the wear and tear of dogs.
Structured ornamental garden. A design based purely on looks and beauty.
The theme of your garden. This is where your inspiration comes from. This could be influenced by a type of plant, culture or environment that you prefer or would like to replicate and could include:

A relaxed, informal country garden
Balinese style resort garden
Rustic Australian native garden
Simple and low maintenance garden
Colour themed gardens
Succulents & Cacti garden
The Design Features in your garden. You will need to decide if there are any design features that you would like to incorporate. These could include:

Hedges
Water features and ponds,
Structural backdrops or pavilions
Retaining Walls
And any additional items which are purely for beauty and do not serve a practical significance.
Budgeting. The more features you want, the more expensive it will be. So be realistic with your budget and don’t over extend yourself as you want to be able to enjoy your new garden design without the worry of how you will be able to ever afford it!

The use and function that you want out of your garden will dictate your design decisions.

When you have visualised what you are after you will need to start creating a design plan. Your first step to landscape design is to measure out your garden site and draw a plan of your current garden. This will need to be to scale showing the correct measurements and proportions of the garden, and indicating the areas of light, shade and elevation. The plan will need to include existing features such as buildings, poles, rocks etc that cannot be moved.

Once you have set up all the elements you can now start to add all of the new landscape design elements that you want. This could include, shrubbery, trees, walkways, paths, patios, sheds, pools, lawn area and irrigation.

Creating a landscape plan will also help you in your decision making processes such as in selecting plants and materials. The more information and detail that you can put into the plan the better you will be able to cost estimate and the more likely you will be to see your design become a reality.

Plant Selection

Plants can make a huge statement in any garden. They are probably the most important single aspect in a new landscape or garden renovation. Plants can set the mood and style of the garden, draw you into different areas and create interesting views and features.

So it is important to have the right plant selection. To do this you should consider:

The Size of the Plant. Read up on how tall and wide the plants grow. Planting large plants in unsuitable places can be a costly experience.
The theme and style of your garden. If your looking to replicate a certain style such as Australian, Balinese, Country, Tropical etc then your plant choice should be a reflection of this.
The climate and location of the plants. Plants are suited to different environments, light conditions and soils. If the area is in full sun then you will need to choose a plant that can withstand direct sunlight.
How much maintenance is required. Some plants require more care, maintenance, watering, and general care than others. If you are not prepared to put in all the effort, choose plants that are drought tolerant and of a hardy nature.
Contrasting colours and textures of plants. Use your plants to give your garden a contrast of light and shade. Plants that have different thickness of leaves, colours or patterns can look great when layered into your garden creating different heights and bursts of colour.
So before you run to the nursery, do some research so that you choose plants that are suited to your area and will survive and thrive.

And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on planning and designing your garden, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.

Retaining walls

Retaining walls are structures that hold or retain soil behind them. There are a wide range of options when choosing a retaining wall for your yard. The retaining wall can be discreet blending into the background, become a great feature of your garden or even provide added seating for your yard.

There are two types of retaining walls:

Gravity Wall. Gravity walls rely on their own strength and weight to hold the soil behind them and are of a shorter height.

Reinforced Walls. Reinforced Walls use layers of Geogrid (a manufactured high strength reinforced grid material) that provide additional stability to the structure to resist the pressure applied by the mass of soil behind it.

Retaining walls can be made from a wide variety of materials including, stones, brick, concrete blocks, treated timber, rocks and boulders. They type and construction of the retaining wall that you need will influence the material that you require. Stone or wood can erode or decompose over time so a hardier material such as concrete or masonry blocks are recommended as they are simple to stack and join together and are a maintenance free retaining wall option.

The retaining wall you build has to be suited to your environment, and the type and construction of it will be determined by its location, surroundings, the slope of the land, the type of soil, and the size and height of the planned retaining wall. So get as much advice as you can and you will be sure to choose a retaining wall that will be practical, look great and last for years & years.

Bed Planning

A well-planned garden bed is the foundation of a thriving and visually appealing outdoor space. In Tasmania, with its unique climate and varied landscapes, bed planning plays a crucial role in ensuring your plants flourish all year round. Whether you are establishing a new garden or revamping an existing one, careful planning will help you achieve a functional, beautiful, and sustainable design.

Why Bed Planning Matters

Bed planning is more than just deciding where to place your plants—it’s about understanding soil conditions, sun exposure, drainage, and seasonal changes. A thoughtfully designed garden bed:

  • Enhances the overall appearance of your property
  • Ensures plants receive the right amount of sunlight and nutrients
  • Improves drainage and reduces maintenance needs
  • Encourages biodiversity by combining compatible plant species

Steps to Effective Bed Planning in Tasmania

1. Assess the Site
Observe how sunlight moves across your garden throughout the day. Tasmania’s seasonal variations mean you’ll need to consider both summer’s long daylight hours and winter’s cooler conditions.

2. Choose the Right Plants
Select plants suited to Tasmania’s climate—native species, hardy perennials, and seasonal colour displays work wonderfully. Think about plant heights, textures, and flowering times for year-round interest.

3. Prepare the Soil
Good soil is the key to a healthy bed. Test your soil’s pH and add compost or organic matter to improve structure and fertility. In areas with clay or sandy soil, amendments may be needed for optimal drainage and plant health.

4. Design for Function and Flow
Arrange taller plants at the back and shorter ones at the front for visibility. Incorporate curves or geometric shapes to create interest and blend your garden beds seamlessly with existing landscaping.

5. Mulch and Edge
Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature. Edging your beds prevents grass intrusion and keeps the garden neat.

Benefits of Professional Bed Planning

Working with experts like Fox Mowing Tasmania ensures your garden beds are designed with both beauty and practicality in mind. We consider soil health, local climate, and plant compatibility to create low-maintenance, high-impact landscapes that thrive in Tasmanian conditions.

Drainage

When it comes to landscaping in Tasmania, proper drainage is one of the most crucial elements for a healthy and attractive garden. Without the right water management systems, your lawn, garden beds, and plants can suffer from waterlogging, soil erosion, and root rot—problems that are both unsightly and costly to fix. At Fox Mowing Tasmania, we offer expert drainage solutions designed to keep your outdoor spaces thriving all year round.

Why Good Drainage Matters

Tasmania’s varied climate—ranging from heavy rainfall in the west to drier conditions in the east—means that garden drainage needs can differ from one property to another. In wetter areas, excessive water can accumulate, creating muddy, unusable lawns and damaging plant roots. In drier areas, poor water retention can leave your garden struggling in the heat.

Good drainage ensures that:

  • Water flows away from your home’s foundations, preventing structural damage.
  • Lawn and garden areas remain usable and visually appealing.
  • Plants receive the right balance of water without being over-saturated.
  • Erosion is minimised, protecting your soil and landscape design.

Irrigation Planning

A thriving garden starts with consistent, efficient watering. In Tasmania’s unique climate – with its cool winters, mild summers, and varying rainfall – having a well-planned irrigation system is essential to keeping your lawn, flowers, vegetables, and shrubs healthy year-round. At Fox Mowing & Gardening, we specialise in creating customised irrigation solutions that save water, reduce maintenance time, and help your garden look its best.

Why Irrigation Planning Matters in Tasmania

While Tasmania enjoys more rainfall than many parts of Australia, the weather can be unpredictable. Long dry spells, wind, and seasonal changes can stress plants and lawns. Proper irrigation planning ensures that:

  • Water reaches the right places – Avoiding waste by targeting the roots where it’s needed most.

  • Water use is efficient – Helping you save money and support sustainable gardening practices.

  • 3. System Design – Planning drip lines, sprinklers, timers, and zones to suit different garden areas.
  • 4. Seasonal Adjustments – Incorporating settings for different times of the year to avoid water waste.
  • 5. Installation & Maintenance – Ensuring everything is set up correctly and performing regular check-ups.

Benefits of a Well-Planned Irrigation System

  • Reduced water bills

Hard Surfaces

In landscaping, hard surfaces refer to the solid, durable elements that form the backbone of your outdoor design. These include pathways, patios, retaining walls, driveways, decks, and other structural features that bring both practicality and beauty to your garden. In Tasmania, where the climate can be unpredictable, incorporating the right hard surfaces ensures your landscape remains functional, safe, and attractive all year round.

The Importance of Hard Surfaces

Hard surfaces are more than just a visual enhancement—they’re essential for creating structure and usability in outdoor spaces. They provide:

  • Accessibility: Smooth and stable paths make it easier to move around the garden, especially during wet seasons.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike lawns or garden beds, hard surfaces require minimal upkeep.
  • Weather Resistance: Quality materials withstand Tasmania’s cool winters and occasional heavy rain.
  • Defined Spaces: They help separate garden zones, creating a sense of order and flow.

Choosing the Right Materials

Selecting the right hard surface materials depends on your property’s style, budget, and maintenance preferences. Popular options in Tasmania include:

  • Natural Stone: Perfect for a rustic, timeless look.
  • Concrete & Pavers: Versatile, durable, and available in various colours and patterns.
  • Timber Decking: Adds warmth and blends beautifully with natural surroundings.
  • Gravel & Pebbles: Affordable and ideal for informal paths or decorative areas.

Design Considerations

When planning hard surfaces, it’s important to think about both functionality and aesthetics:

  • Drainage: Proper water management is essential to prevent flooding and erosion.
  • Slip Resistance: Particularly important for Tasmania’s wetter months.
  • Integration with Soft Landscaping: Blending plants with hard surfaces ensures balance and visual appeal.
  • Sustainability: Choosing eco-friendly materials and permeable surfaces can help reduce environmental impact.

Why Professional Installation Matters

While DIY might seem tempting, poorly installed hard surfaces can lead to uneven paths, drainage issues, and costly repairs. A professional landscaping team ensures:

  • Correct preparation of the base
  • Use of high-quality, long-lasting materials
  • Designs tailored to your property and climate

FAQs About Hard Surfaces in Landscaping
Q: Are hard surfaces high-maintenance?
A: Most hard surfaces are low-maintenance, only requiring occasional cleaning or resealing.
Q: Can hard surfaces increase property value?
A: Absolutely. Well-designed, professionally installed hardscaping can significantly boost curb appeal and resale value.
Q: What’s the best hard surface for wet areas?
A: Non-slip pavers, textured concrete, and treated timber are great options for Tasmania’s damp conditions.
